Chennai Super Kings will play Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 opener

MS Dhoni, who has retired from international cricket, will be back in action later this month leading Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 41-year-old led CSK to four titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. Last year, Dhoni was replaced by all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja as captain, however, Jadeja failed to shine in the role and later the baton was handed back to Dhoni.

The IPL is returning to the home-away format after three years due to the outbreak of Covid-19 virus in 2020. CSK will play the IPL 2023 opener against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 31.

CSK had a terrible IPL season last year as they finished second from the bottom in the points table. However, they will be coming into the IPL 2023 with an aim to win the title for the fifth time. Notably, Dhoni is likely to call his time in IPL after playing in front of the Chepauk crowd.

Recently, former Australian cricketer and former CSK player, Matthew Hayden said that Dhoni would be looking to retire on a high from the IPL in front of the crowd in Chennai. During one of CSK's events a couple years ago, Dhoni had sais that he would play his final IPL season at Chepauk, but never revealed when it would be as he had said "It might be next year, or five years later, you never know."
