Former New Zealand legend Chris Cairns walks on crutches for first time following spinal stroke, shares video

Former New Zealand cricketer and all-time great Chris Cairns took centre stage and shared a video on his social media, where he was seen walking on crutches after suffering a life-threatening heart attack back in 2021. As a result of the heart attack, Cairns suffered a spinal stroke and has been bound to a wheelchair ever since. 

Furthermore, he was also diagnosed with bowel cancer a few months after the heart attack. However, the 53-year-old has made a miraculous recovery and took to Instagram to share a video of himself walking and sharing his progress with his fans. 

"As well as meeting the remarkable John Maclean (man, what an inspirational bloke). Today was just unreal. Huge thanks to Daz and Paul from @neuromuscular_o …two men helping people improve their lives…both of you are Champions. Just keep moving it forwards…inch by inch…and smash a ceiling or two on the way…(please excuse the semi-n**ity and chicken legs)," Chris Cairns wrote on his Instagram.

Cairns was diagnosed with cancer last year after suffering a heart attack in 2021

In what turned out to be a horrific 2022 for Chris Cairns, the former New Zealand great has shown incredible resilience and strength to get back to this stage. The 53-year-old went through several surgeries, rehabilitation, and chemotherapy. Over the past two years, Cairns has regularly kept his fans up-to-date on Instagram. Back in August 2022, Cairns posted on his handle, that it marked a whole year since he suffered through an aortic dissection.

"It is a year today that I was admitted to hospital with an aortic dissection, an event that would impact every aspect of my life (and those around me) in ways I never imagined possible," Cairns mentioned in his heartwarming post.

Suffering for more than two years now, the former cricketer is an inspiration to many. A living example of the never-give-up spirit, his patience and resilience finally bore fruit as he walked with crutches. Speaking of Cairns’ on-field heroics, the 53-year-old was one of a kind in his prime. As an all-rounder, he played 62 Tests for New Zealand, where he scored 3320 runs and took 218 wickets. Furthermore, in ODIs, he played 215 matches, scored 4950 runs, and took 201 wickets.
