Gautam Gambhir is a misunderstood person, there's a people's person behind him: Harsha Bhogle

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir was appointed the head coach of the Indian team on July 9, succeeding Rahul Dravid. The veteran mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL 2024 trophy after leading them to the titles in 2012 and 2014 as skipper. Speaking of Gambhir, ace commentator Harsha Bhogle has termed him a "highly misunderstood" person. 

Gambhir appears to be aggressive in his approach in the middle and his infamous brawls with his once teammate Virat Kohli are a testament to his fierceness. While many had raised alarms about his leadership attributed to the intensity, Bhogle remarked that the former southpaw has a "tremendous" record in India as a captain.

“I think Gautam Gambhir is a slightly misunderstood person because of his body language; because he seems brazen; because he seems to want to get into a fight all the time. But his record in India as a leader actually is actually very good and the people who played under Gautam Gambhir really look up to him. So, there's a people's person behind Gautam Gambhir as well, which is something that will be tested not as much here, not as much in India. I think when it comes to five [Tests] in Australia and five in England. That is when he will be really tested,” said Bhogle while speaking to Talk Sport.

The 42-year-old’s first assignment as coach was the white-ball tour to Sri Lanka. Though India managed to win the T20I series 3-0, they eventually lost the ODIs 2-1. While many applauded the sight of India’s regular batters rolling their arms over in the first ODI, the subsequent losses became a bitter pill to swallow. After over a month of being out of action, the Indian team will host Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, starting September 19 in Chennai.
