After absolutely thrashing Australia in the first Test at Nagpur, team India resumed their business in a similar fashion, as they bowled out the Pat Cummins-led side for 263 runs on Day 1 of the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, the visitors were much better this time around even when the spinners were weaving their magic in the middle.

Opener Usman Khawaja finally lived up to his expectations, scoring 81 runs to bail Australia out of a difficult position after they lost wickets of David Warner, Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith. Travis Head too was a flop show as Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami were all over the Aussie batters before Lunch. However, Peter Handscomb made sure to give a tough fight to the Indian bowlers and he did so as the 31-year-old remained unbeaten at 72.

Skipper Pat Cummins (33) tried to support him well in the middle but soon after his dismissal, Australia’s batting unit fell like a house of cards. Handscomb was taking a lot of responsibility in the middle but never got support from the other end soon after Cummins was dismissed.

When it comes to Indian bowlers, ace pacer Shami picked up four wickets while spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked up three each. Notably, the 34-year-old Jadeja clinched his 250th Test scalp in this match. Overall, India looked comfortable throughout the course of the first innings and will be happy to be able to restrict the Aussies at 263.

Meanwhile, with the bat, India posted 21 runs at the end of day's play as both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul looked solid at the crease.  Now, since Australia are playing with three specialist spinners, they will come hard at the Indian batters on Day 2 but given India's record against spinners, the team will be relaxed after a soothing Day 1 in Delhi.
