India continued from where they left on Day 1 and got themselves into a commanding position on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, September 20.

Starting the day at 339/6, the hosts lost the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja for 86 as Bangladesh broke his epic 199-run partnership with Ravichandran Ashwin. Akash Deep came out to bat at No. 9 and threw his bat around to get to 17 runs in quick time, hitting four boundaries. He was eventually dismissed by Taskin Ahmed, who accounted for the wicket of Ashwin in his following over after the hometown hero scored 113 off 133 balls. Hasan Mahmud wrapped things up as he completed a five-for after dismissing Jasprit Bumrah. India were bowled out for 376 before the lunch break.

Bangladesh didn't get off to a great start as Shadman Islam perished on the final ball of the first over bowled by Bumrah. Zakir Hasan and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto did well to survive a fiery spell of fast-bowling from Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. However, Akash Deep continued his purple patch from the Duleep Trophy and picked up the wickets of Zakir and Mominul Haque off consecutive deliveries before Lunch.

Siraj also came to the party in the second session and sent Shanto packing. Mushfiqur Rahim departed next, nicking one to KL Rahul at second slip. Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan tried to weather the storm after the visitors lost half their side with just 40 on the board.

The two veterans added 51 runs for the six wicket but went back in quick succession as Bangladesh slumped to 92/7. Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored an unbeaten 27 and some handy contributions from the tailenders took the tourists to 149. Bumrah starred with figures of 4/50 in 11 overs, while Siraj, Deep, and Jadeja supported him well by picking up two wickets apiece.

Rohit, Kohli disappoint yet again

India had a lead of 227 and could have enforced the follow-on but they decided against it. Rohit, who was dismissed for six in the first innings, departed for five as he became Taskin's fourth victim in the Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a couple of boundaries before edging one to Litton off Nahid Rana. Virat Kohli batted 37 balls alongside Shubman Gill and scored 17 runs. However, he was given LBW off Mehidy on-field and he didn't go for the DRS. Later, UltraEdge showed a spike.

Gill looked assured at the crease as he remained unbeaten on 33 at Stumps. Rishabh Pant (12*) gave him company and the duo will look to add to the 308-run lead on Day 3. The home side are at 81/3 in their second innings after 23 overs.
