IND vs ENG 2024, 3rd Test, Day 3: Why are Indian players wearing black armbands?

On Day 3 of the third Test against England in Rajkot, the Indian players were seen wearing the black armbands on their sleeves. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that it is a mark of respect for former India captain Dattajirao Gaekwad, who passed away on Tuesday, February 13 at the age of 95 due to age-related ailments. He was also the oldest Indian cricketer at the time of his passing.

Notably, Gaekwad played 11 Tests and led the national team during India’s tour of England in 1959. Under his able leadership, Baroda won the Ranji Trophy in the 1957-58 season, beating Services in the final. The Ranji win played a huge role in him getting the opportunity to lead the national team the next year.

India pick two early wickets on Day 3

In the absence of Ravichandran Ashwin, India had to start strongly on Day 3. They managed to do so as Jasprit Bumrah once again got the better of Joe Root. The former England captain tried to reverse scoop the Indian pacer but failed to time it. It went to the second slip, where Yashasvi Jaiswal was stationed as he picked up a sensational catch to send Root back to the pavilion. 

Soon after that, Kuldeep Yadav got the better of Jonny Bairstow. The stumper-batter failed to decipher the turn as the leg spin went on to hit the pads and the umpire gave him out. However, Bairstow decided to review it but it was three reds. 

Ben Duckett, meanwhile, completed 150 runs in Rajkot. He looked flawless with the bat and continued to be on his merry way on the third morning of the Test before Kuldeep got him caught by Shubman Gill in covers.
