The fourth Test of the ongoing five-game series between India and England came to a close. Both sides locked horns at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, on Friday, February 23, and the clash began with England batting first after winning the toss.
The side got off to a subpar start, with Zak Crawley scoring 42 runs to open the innings, but debutant Akash Deep burst onto the scene, dismissing England’s top order and providing India with a brilliant start. Star batter Joe Root stabilised the innings for England, scoring 122* runs in 274 deliveries. Furthermore, Ben Foakes added 47 runs, Ollie Robinson scored 58, and England posted a total of 353 runs in the first innings.
Ravindra Jadeja was the highest wicket-taker for India in the first innings, with four wickets to his name. Akash Deep took three wickets, with Mohammed Siraj taking two and Ravichandran Ashwin striking once.
In response, the Indian team got off to a good start with the bat. Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings with a score of 73 runs in 117 deliveries. However, the rest of the batting order could not amount to much. Shubman Gill departed on a score of 38 runs; Rajat Patidar added 17; but it was the knock of Dhruv Jurel, who scored 90 runs and propelled India to a score of 307 runs in the first innings.
India’s resilience propels them to series win
Aiming to maximise their lead against India and post a big total on the board, England failed to perform to the best of their abilities. Zak Crawley scored 60 runs, but the rest of the batting attack. failed to make an impact. The Indian bowling attack had England on their knees in the second innings as the visitors were bundled out for 145 runs in the second innings, giving India a target of 192 runs to chase down and win the game.
Attempting to chase down the target, India overcame quite a few hurdles in the second innings. Rohit Sharma started off the run chase with a knock of 55 runs in 81 deliveries; Jaiswal was sent back to the pavilion for 37 runs, but the middle order failed to showcase their skills. Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan were dismissed for a duck, but Shubman Gill went unbeaten on a score of 52 runs as India won the game by five wickets to gain an unassailable lead in the ongoing Test series.
