After winning the first two matches in Nagpur and Delhi respectively, team India started the third Test as the favourites. However, the tables quickly turned when Australia absolutely decimated India’s batting unit on the very first day, restricting them to 109. 26-year-old Matthew Kuhnemann was absolutely sensational, picking up five wickets, while veteran spinner Nathan Lyon scalped three wickets.

Nothing really worked for India with the bat as Virat Kohli registered the highest individual score of 22, followed by Shubman Gill (21). Meanwhile, veteran batter and Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara (1) once again failed to live up to his potential. Shreyas Iyer too, looked poor while neither Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel nor Ravichandran Ashwin could bail India out this time around.

With the bat, Australia had a rather poor start as Jadeja dismissed Travis Head for 9 but Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne managed to bring things under control. The southpaw scored 60 off 147 deliveries while Labuschagne scored 31 off 91. The latter could have been sent back to the pavilion in the fourth over of the innings itself but Jadeja’s unfortunate no-ball gave him a lifeline.

Soon after their dismissal, Steve Smith stepped up and tried to play his natural game but while doing so, got out off Jadeja's delivery scoring just 26 runs. Notably, southpaw picked all four wickets off Australia’s innings so far but the Kangaroos will be more or less happy with the total they have put on the board at the end of the day’s play.

They are currently leading by 47 runs as Peter Handscomb and the returning Cameron Green looked solid to end the day. Now, if the Steve Smith-led side manages to add another 100-150 runs on Day 2 of the Test match, India will be under tremendous pressure and will have to play an exceptional brand of cricket to get out of the situation. However for now, they need to start Day 2 on a stronger note as Australia currently are in the driver's seat.
