When India resumed their innings at 36/0 on Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Test in Ahmedabad all eyes were on both India openers, who were unbeaten overnight. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took the innings forward as India had an uphill task at hand trailing by 444 runs in the first innings after Australia scored a mammoth total of 480.
The opening duo added 74 runs for the first wicket before Matthew Kuhnemann gave Australia their first strike dismissing the Indian skipper at an individual score of 35. Following his dismissal, Cheteshwar Pujara joined Gill at the crease and the duo added 113 runs for the second wicket.
Pujara was looking solid at the crease batting on 42, however, his innings was put to an end by Todd Murphy, who got him out LBW. At the other end, Gill continued his sublime form and reached his second Test ton in the second session of the day with a boundary against Murphy.
After Pujara’s wicket, Virat Kohli and Gill added 58 runs for the third wicket as India looked to take on the Aussie bowlers. Australia struck late in the day dismissing the well-set Gill who departed after scoring 128 smashing 12 fours and a six in his innings.
The Indian team management continued its ploy of sending Ravindra Jadeja ahead of Shreyas Iyer in the batting order to get a left and right-handed combination at the crease.
Virat Kohli scores a half century after 16 innings
The southpaw decided to play out the day and started his innings defensively. On the other hand, Kohli also didn’t look in any hurry and gradually marched towards his half-century. He reached the landmark after a gap of 16 innings with his previous half-century coming against South Africa in January 2022.
India ended Day 3 on 289/3 with Virat Kohli on 59* and Ravindra Jadeja on 16* as the duo will continue its unbeaten stand of 44 runs for the fourth wicket. Nathan Lyon, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Todd Murphy picked up one wicket each for Australia on Day 3. India trail behind Australia by 191 runs having seven wickets in hand going into Day 4.
