After a dominating performance in the 2023 Asia Cup, India began their three-match ODI series against Australia with a relatively comfortable win in the first match in Mohali on Friday, September 22.
In the absence of Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the first two ODIs, KL Rahul was announced as the captain of the side. He won the toss and invited Australia to bat first. Mohammed Shami got an opportunity as Mohammed Siraj was rested after bagging a decisive six-for in the Asia Cup final versus Sri Lanka. The 33-year-old struck in the very first over as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh with a beautiful delivery.
Australia's two most experienced batters, David Warner and Steve Smith joined forces to form a 94-run partnership off 106 balls to steady the ship. However, both batters were dismissed in quick succession as India got back into the game with some tight bowling in the middle overs. Cameron Greena and Marnus Labuschagne played watchful knocks and stitched a partnership of 45 runs off 68 balls. After they departed, Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis took the attack to the bowlers and their 62-run partnership off 43 balls gave the Australian innings some much-needed momentum.
However, Shami's burst at the death yielded three wickets as he ended with career-best figures of 5/51 in his 10 overs. Pat Cummins' cameo of 21* off nine balls took Australia to 276 but the score didn't seem to threatening on a decent track.
Indian openers show their class
A new opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill stepped out to the middle. Both of them played some sizzling shots to find the boundaries at regular intervals. The Punjab batter was more flamboyant of the two as he didn't allow the Australian bowlers to settle down. The sparkling duo had a partnership of 142 runs in 130 deliveries before Ruturaj was dismissed for 71. This started a mini-collapse as India slumped to 185/4.
However, the experienced duo of KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav played sensible cricket and their 80-run partnership off 85 balls helped the hosts get to within touching distance. Suryakumar departed for a morale-boosting 50 off 49 balls before Rahul (58 off 63 balls) took his team home alongside Ravindra Jadeja. India eventually won with five wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.
