It was the Suryakumar Yadav show when five-time champions Mumbai Indians hosted league leaders Gujarat Titans at the Wankhede. The T20 batting phenomenon put on a masterclass, registering his maiden IPL century in trademark style. Iconic Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was in awe of the Mumbai batter's exploits after his sensational innings.
Mumbai Indians made a blistering start to the match, thanks to skipper Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan's explosive opening stand. However, three wickets in quick succession saw the visitors make a comeback of sorts in the contest. But Gujarat Titans' bowlers were rendered powerless against a menacing Suryakumar Yadav, who stitched a match-defining partnership with Vishnu Vinod.
Despite Vinod's departure, Suryakumar continued with his pyro techniques, dispatching a six off the final ball of the first innings to get to his maiden IPL century in just 49 deliveries. The no.1 ranked T20I batter put on a show of fearless batting, dispatching the bowlers to unusual corners as he does most often. Mumbai Indians scrape past GT despite Rashid Khan's scare
The 2011 World Cup-winning all-rounder also praised Afghan spinner Rashid Khan for a brilliant bowling spell, which kept the Mumbai batters in check during Suryakumar Yadav's carnage. Rashid also played a swashbuckling innings with the bat during GT's chase, smashing 79 runs off just 32 deliveries, only to end on the losing side as he did not receive any support from the other end.
Rohit Sharma's side climbed up to the third place in the IPL 2023 points table courtesy of their victory against the defending champions and are looking likely to seal a spot in the playoff after last year's disappointment.
