Joe Root came into the fourth Test in Ranchi on the back of a string of low scores. However, on Friday, February 23, he registered his 31st Test century to save England after they had been reduced to 112/5 on Day 1.

England garnered criticism for throwing their wickets away to rash shots in their quest to abide by their Bazball tactics. Root was a part of the guilty party as he played some unnecessary shots that led to his downfall. However, on Day 1 of the fourth Test, the champion batter came up with a gritty century that could go a long way in helping England restore parity in the series.

On the back of Root's unbeaten century, England finished Day 1 at 302/7 after losing half their side in the first session itself. The star batter played orthodox cricket during his innings and thwarted the Indian bowlers commendably. His sixth-wicket partnership of 113 runs with Ben Foakes helped the visitors to resurrect the innings.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan seemed to have taken a subtle dig at the Bazball approach while praising the fightback from the tourists.

"Lovely to see Common sense Ball .. #INDvsENG," Vaughan wrote on his official 'X' (formerly Twitter) handle.

Vaughan also put out a tweet to criticise the pitch. The 49-year-old termed the pitch at the JSCA International Stadium Complex a "shocker".

"The old saying .. Do not judge a pitch till both teams have batted and bowled on it .. but let’s be honest .. this one looks a shocker .. #INDvsENG," Vaughan tweeted.

England bowled out for 353, Joe Root remains stranded on 122 on Day 2

England got off to a fine start on Day 2 as overnight batters Root and Ollie Robinson added 45 runs in quick time. However, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets in quick time as the Three Lions were bundled out for 352. Root remained stranded on 122 after Robinson registered his first Test half-century.

James Anderson got England the early breakthrough as he got Rohit Sharma out caught-behind for 2 in his second over.
