Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma came to bat as an impact player, after not featuring in the first innings of the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing IPL 2023. Suryakumar Yadav, who’s leading the side in Rohit’s absence, mentioned during the toss that the 35-year-old is suffering from a stomach bug but eventually, the cricketer came out to bat, which surprised many fans on Twitter.
Notably, Sharma couldn’t do much damage against KKR as he hit only 20 runs in 13 deliveries. He was looking in great touch but Suyash Sharma eventually send him back to the pavilion after Umesh Yadav picked a stunning catch at mid-off. Rohit was spotted smiling after his dismissal as the cricketer didn’t expect Yadav to pull that off.
Nevertheless, Twitter was elated to learn that nothing major has happened to the Indian skipper. However, some took a dig at him for not coming out to field during MI's bowling. Probably, this was the first occasion where a top player sat out for half the match. Moreover, it can be deemed as a rare moment where a skipper opts out to lead the side but comes out to bat as a player for the side in the same match. This truly was an interesting move to employ the 'Impact player' rule in a rather unusual fashion.
Consequently, some fans took to Twitter to reflect on the same. Interestingly enough, some fans compared it to Gully-cricket antics by pointing out on a rather hilarious note that Sharma not wanting to field but only came out to bat.
Here's how Twitter reacted to Rohit Sharma's return as an Impact player and his knock:
Venkatesh Iyer storms Kolkata’s batting in the first innings
Coming to bat at the number three slot for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Venkatesh Iyer changed the complexion of the game with his ferocious strikes in the first innings. The Indore-born cricketer smashed a cracking century to help Kolkata post 185 runs on board after 20 years. With the help of nine sixes and six boundaries, Iyer scored 104 runs off 51 deliveries and with that, he became the current IPL Orange Cap holder.
When all the other batters were struggling to get going, Iyer kept his calm and punished MI batters. This was also the first time in almost 15 years that a KKR batter has managed to touch the three-digit mark in the competition.
When it comes to the chase, flamboyant batter Ishan Kishan gave MI a perfect start. The Southpaw smashed 58 runs in just 25 deliveries and set the tone of the match. However, with his dismissal, the five-time champions looked to be under pressure but are still in control after the first 10 overs in the second innings.
