As Team India gears up to face Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on November 2nd in the ICC World Cup 2023, Captain Rohit Sharma isn't exactly thrilled about the welcome they're receiving from Mumbai's 'smog brigade.' Rohit recently graced his Instagram story with an aerial shot from his flight, showcasing the city of dreams looking more like the city of smog, with visibility levels playing hard to get. He captioned “Mumbai. Yeh kya ho gaya (Mumbai, what has happened?)”
Mumbai's recent weather conditions have raised concerns, with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reporting an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 161 in Mumbai on Tuesday morning, categorizing it as 'moderate.' The most severe air pollution has been observed at Bandra Kurla Complex, registering AQI levels of 257. Following closely are Sion with an AQI of 218, the Kherwadi area in Bandra East at 198, and Navy Nagar in Colaba at 189.
Joe Root had criticised Mumbai’s air quality after the match in Wankhede Stadium
Like Rohit, Joe Root expressed his dissatisfaction with Mumbai's air quality during this World Cup. The England cricketer criticized the air quality management at the Cricket World Cup in India, citing breathing difficulties during his team's recent loss. Root likened the air quality at the Wankhede Stadium to ‘eating air’ in the distinctive conditions.
"I've not played in anything like that before. I've obviously played in hotter conditions, and probably more humid conditions. But it just felt like you couldn't get your breath. It was like you were eating the air. It was unique," Root had said.
Root emphasized his point by highlighting the situation with South Africa's Heinrich Klassen, the Player of the Match, who was unable to resume fielding after his remarkable innings of 109 runs from 67 balls. "You could see it with Klaasen. You could see how much it took out of him, not being able to get back out onto the field," Root added. With three more matches to be held in Mumbai, including a semi-final, the concerns remain pertinent.
