South African cricketer Faf du Plessis took to X on August 29, 2026, to express his sympathy for those affected by the devastating Bhotekoshi flood in Nepal. The post came as rescue operations were still underway across multiple districts and the death toll continued to climb.

Du Plessis, who posts on X under the handle @faf1307, recalled visiting Nepal in 2025 during the Nepal Premier League (NPL). He described the experience as one that left a lasting impression, noting the warmth of the people and the beauty of the landscape.

"I was lucky enough to visit Nepal last year and experience firsthand the kindness of its people and the incredible beauty of the country. It's devastating to see what has happened. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, and with the families and communities facing such heartbreaking loss," Du Plessis wrote on X.

Scale of the Bhotekoshi flood disaster

The Bhotekoshi flood struck the mountainous Nepal-Tibet border region on Wednesday morning. Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority confirmed that a glacier-inclusive flood occurred in the Lhende Khola river following an ice-rock avalanche on the Nepali side. The surge moved south through the Lhende Khola into the Bhotekoshi and then the Trishuli rivers, with water levels in the Trishuli reportedly rising by as much as 9 metres in just 30 minutes. The death toll has risen to over 650 as of Saturday, August 29.

Faf du Plessis, the former South African captain, is currently playing in the inaugural edition of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL). Six teams are participating in this franchise league, hosted in a double round-robin format in which each team faces the other twice before the playoffs.

After starting the campaign with a five-wicket victory against Amsterdam Flames, du Plessis and Co. would be hoping to double their points tally.
