Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have formed a heated rivalry in recent times and a new chapter in the same was written on Monday, November 6 in their ODI World Cup 2023 clash in Delhi.
Angelo Mathews became the first batter in international cricket to be 'timed out'. This gave rise to a lot of heated exchanges between the players from the two teams. After the match, Mathews took to 'X' to share proof that he had reached the crease before the two-minute time limit.

The controversial incident took place in the 25th over of Sri Lanka's innings. Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed for a fluent 41 by Shakib Al Hasan. Mathews, batting at No. 6, made his way out to the middle. However, the strap of his helmet got broken and he had to call for a new helmet. The Bangladesh captain appealed to the umpires for a 'timed-out' dismissal as he felt that Mathews was past the two-minute time limit that a new batter gets to be ready to face his first ball. The on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth ruled the decision in favour of the fielding team and Mathews was asked to take the long walk back to the pavilion.
The Sri Lankan team was livid with this call. Mathews lambasted Shakib and termed Bangladesh's act as 'disgraceful'. The Sri Lankan players also didn't shake hands after their heartbreaking three-wicket loss.

They will look to overcome the defeat to Bangladesh and finish their campaign on a high when they take on New Zealand on Thursday, November 9 in Bengaluru. While Sri Lanka are on a three-match losing streak, the Blackcaps have suffered four defeats in a row. New Zealand will fight to stay in the semi-final race, while Kusal Mendis' men will look to ensure a qualification to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy by finishing within the top eight on the points table.
