The Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai witnessed a fine century from Daryl Mitchell during the ODI World Cup semi-final clash between India and New Zealand on Wednesday, November 15.

In testing conditions, Mitchell battled cramps to score a 119-ball 134 and kept New Zealand in the hunt during their chase of 398. The Kiwis eventually fell short by 70 runs but the right-handed batter received adulation for his gritty innings. During his knock, Mitchell was assisted at one point by Ishan Kishan, who stepped out onto the field as the 12th man. The wicketkeeper-batter tried to comfort the New Zealander when he was experiencing cramps in his leg.

Mitchell didn't forget Kishan's kind gesture and show of sportsmanship as he shared a story on his official Instagram handle and thanked the 25-year-old.

Mitchell finished the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign as the second-highest run-getter for the Black Caps. He scored 552 runs in nine innings at a staggering average of 69 and an equally impressive strike rate of 111.07. The 32-year-old scored two fifties and as many centuries during the marquee event. Interestingly, both his centuries came against the 'Men in Blue'. Only Rachin Ravindra scored more runs than Mitchell in the tournament for New Zealand.

New Zealand fall short of reaching third consecutive ODI World Cup final

The Kiwis reached the finals of the ODI World Cup for the first time in 2015 by defeating South Africa in the semifinals. Brendon McCullum's men lost to Australia in the summit clash. In the 2019 edition of the World Cup, New Zealand defeated India in the semis before losing to England on the Boundary Count rule in the finals.

This time, New Zealand had the chance to become only the third team after the West Indies and Australia to reach three back-to-back ODI World Cup finals but they couldn't get over the line against the home side. Kane Williamson and Co. finished their campaign with five wins and five losses in the 10 games they played
