In the eighth clash of the ICC World Cup 2023, Pakistan clinched a glorious triumph over Sri Lanka, securing a six-wicket victory to uphold their flawless track record against the Sri Lankan side in World Cup showdowns. Pakistan's head-to-head dominance now stands tall at 8-0, a testament to their prowess on the grandest cricketing stage.

This epic showdown unfolded on a pitch tailor-made for the batsmen, where Sri Lanka showcased their prowess by posting an imposing total of 344 runs on the scorecard. The heroes of the Lankan innings were Kusal Mendis (122) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (108) who notched up stunning centuries. Mendis, the fortunate recipient of a couple of lifelines, seized the moment with a breathtaking century off a mere 65 balls – the fastest ever by a Sri Lankan in World Cup history. Meanwhile, Samarawickrama, in his maiden One Day International century, graced the pitch with elegance, bolstering Sri Lanka's innings significantly.

Facing this daunting target, Pakistan found themselves in a spot of bother during the initial powerplay, losing the wickets of Imam for just 12 runs, courtesy of a well-executed bouncer from Dilshan Madushanka, and the skipper, Babar Azam, who managed only 10 runs.

Pakistan’s resilience was on total display after a shaky start

The Green Shirts displayed remarkable resilience and unwavering determination. Abdullah Shafique (113), entrusted with the opening role in place of Fakhar, exuded fluency at the crease. Meanwhile, Rizwan (131), despite a shaky start, regained his rhythm. Together, this dynamic duo not only steadied Pakistan's ship but also cranked up the tempo, piling immense pressure on the Sri Lankan bowlers. The spinners, including Pathirana, grappled to find their groove.

Pakistan seemed to be sailing towards a memorable victory, with Shafique's splendid 113 decorating the scoreboard. However, a moment of sheer brilliance from Hemantha resulted in a breathtaking catch, breaking the formidable 176-run partnership. Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, this glimmer of hope couldn't be converted into a game-changing momentum shift. Rizwan, battling cramps, showcased exceptional match management skills and remained unbeaten, guiding his team to a historic triumph.
