Virat Kohli played one of his most important knocks for India in the fifth match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday, October 8, against Australia in Chennai. The 'Men in Blue' started their campaign in the showpiece event with a six-wicket win against the Pat Cummins-led side. Chasing 200 for a crucial victory, India were reduced to 2/3 in the second over.
Australia had their tails up by Virat Kohli and KL Rahul formed a 165-run partnership off 215 balls to take India on the brink of a monumental win. However, with 33 runs still required, the Delhi batter was dismissed for 85 off 116 balls, missing out on a well-deserved 48th ODI century. After reluctantly returning to the dressing room, Kohli was seen expressing his disappointment.

Indian bowlers rule the roost in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023
Earlier in the day, Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first on a dry wicket in the ODI World Cup 2023 opener of both teams. Jasprit Bumrah gave India the ideal start as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh in the third over. David Warner and Steve Smith formed a watchful 69-run partnership to help Australia get to 74 runs in the 17th over.
After the southpaw was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav, Smith and Marnus Labuschagne added 36 runs. However, the five-time champions slipped from 110/2 to 140/7. Mitchell Starc added some important runs before Australia were bowled out for 199. Ravindra Jadeja was the wrecker-in-chief as he finished with excellent figures of 3/28 in 10 overs.
Bumrah and Kuldeep picked two wickets apiece while Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravichandran Ashwin chipped in with a wicket each. India will face Afghanistan in their next game on Wednesday, October 11, in Delhi. Australia, on the other hand, will travel to Lucknow to face an in-form South African side on Thursday, October 12.
