PAK-W vs IRE-W: Irish wicketkeeper Mary Waldron dons a unique helmet, grabs eyeballs

There have been many instances in the game of cricket, where players have donned a unique look while taking the field. Bowlers wearing a face shield to protect themselves is common nowadays, and many players have actually pulled that off. But the helmet Ireland’s wicketkeeper Mary Waldron pulled off was something very unique.

Ireland Women are currently in Pakistan as the two teams locked horns for a three-match ODI series. In the third game against Pakistan on November 9, Wednesday, Mary Waldron wore a different style of a helmet while keeping the gloves, which one would have never seen in the game of cricket because it is rare to see wicketkeepers opt for a different kind of helmet.

The helmet was a little similar to what the Rugby players wear, but what Waldron donned was completely different from a usual cricketing helmet. Another player who wears a different sort of wicketkeeping helmet is India’s wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik. The 37-year-old sensation wears a helmet with a very unusual appearance that is similar to those worn during baseball and American football games. It is not sphere-shaped and has no center bulge.

Speaking of Ireland’s game against Pakistan, the visitors have already lost the series as Pakistan won the first two games to clinch the series early. Ireland won the toss and elected to bat first in the third game. The openers Leah Paul and Gaby Lewis started off well but were slow in their game. They put up an 84-run opening stand before Lewis was dismissed.

Top-order batter Amy Hunter played a composed knock of a 43-ball 41 before being dismissed, and Paul followed her real quick as she was dismissed off the very next delivery, courtesy of Ghulam Fatima. The middle-order batters tried to anchor the innings, but could not score big. Ireland’s batting unit came crashing down thereon, and they were dished out just a ball before the end of their innings, in 49.5 overs for a score of 225 runs.
