In a heart-wrenching moment during the first day of the 3rd Test between India and England in Rajkot, debutant Team India batter Sarfaraz Khan found himself in a moment of despair. With a promising start, Sarfaraz's debut innings took a sorrowful twist. A call for a swift single by Jadeja, who was batting at 99, led Sarfaraz to advance, but a sudden change of mind left him stranded mid-pitch.
A precise throw by Mark Wood sealed Sarfaraz's fate, leaving him short of the crease and agonizingly run out. The dressing room witnessed a crestfallen Sarfaraz, his hands resting atop his head, reflecting the bitter end to what promised to be a memorable innings.
In the thrilling Test match, India opted to bat first post winning the toss. Their batting lineup faced an early collapse, struggling at 33/3 within the first hour. However, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja orchestrated a remarkable rescue mission, stitching together a formidable 204-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Rohit displayed grit until a moment of impatience saw him depart for 131 runs off 196 balls, succumbing to a short delivery from Mark Wood in the final session. The newcomer, Sarfaraz Khan, made a striking debut, exhibiting remarkable rhythm and notching a rapid half-century off just 48 balls, a record for an Indian debutant. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding with Jadeja led to his dismissal at 62 off 66 balls, marking a bittersweet debut.
‘Sarfu, really proud of you, the way you have come through’ – Anil Kumble
Sarfaraz Khan, after toiling in the domestic circuit, earned his first India call-up ahead of the Vizag Test. Despite his selection, he remained on the bench as Shreyas Iyer handled the middle order. However, in the Rajkot Test, due to certain middle-order absences, he finally got his chance. The legendary Anil Kumble, former Indian leg-spinner, presented Sarfaraz Khan with his Test cap on Thursday morning before the commencement of the third Test against England.
"Sarfu, really proud of you, the way you have come through. I am sure your dad and family will be extremely proud of what you have been able to achieve. I know you have done all the hard work, there were some disappointments but despite that, all the runs you've scored through the domestic season, well done to you. And I am sure you'll have lots of wonderful memories today. It's the start of a long career, only 310 people have played before you. All the best," Anil Kumble could be heard as saying in a video posted by BCCI.
