'Still get goosebumps' - Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina reminisce India’s glorious 2011 World Cup win

April 2, 2011 was the day when the Indian team rewrote history and lifted the ODI World Cup after 28 years under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Competing against Sri Lanka in the final of the marquee tournament at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2, India successfully chased down a target of 275 runs. 

13 years to the day, former Indian cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, who were crucial parts of India’s World Cup winning campaign, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) and reflected on their feelings after winning the tournament. 

Yuvraj Singh shared an edit where he talked about reliving the feelings that he felt after lifting the title. Reliving this feeling,” Yuvraj Singh tweeted. Furthermore, Suresh Raina shared a picture of the Indian team lifting the title and stated, “Still get goosebumps thinking about that historic moment in 2011 when we lifted the World Cup. Incredible memories with an amazing team!”

Gambhir-Dhoni duo propelled India to title win in 2011

The 2011 World Cup final began with Sri Lanka coming in to bat first after winning the toss. The side opened with Upul Tharanga scoring two runs in 20 deliveries, with Tillakaratne Dilshan adding 33 runs on the board. 

Skipper Kumar Sangakkara added 48 runs on the board, with Mahela Jayawardene playing a mammoth unbeaten knock of 103 runs in 88 deliveries and Nuwan Kulasekara scoring 32 runs as Sri Lanka posted a total of 274 runs in the first innings. 

As for India, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan were the highest wicket takers in the first innings with two wickets each to their names. Harbhajan Singh struck once as well. 

Aiming to chase down the total, India got off to a subpar start as opener Virender Sehwag was sent packing for a duck. Furthermore, Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed for 18 runs, with Virat Kohli adding 35 runs in 49 deliveries. 

It was the knocks of Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni that helped India chase down the target. Gambhir scored 97 runs in 122 deliveries, whereas Dhoni played an unbeaten knock of 91 runs, helping India win the game by six wickets and lift the title after 28 years.
