Retirement in plans? Yuzvendra Chahal's 'The Last Dance' post sparks speculation

Yuzvendra Chahal posted photographs on his social media handle on Wednesday, September 23 with him posing at the players' stands of the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London, overlooking the special landmark. The caption read simply: "The Last Dance 🤙".

The post, shared from Chahal's verified X handle, quickly drew attention online. One account, @cricketmht, responded publicly with "RIP bhai? (Retirement in Plans)", reflecting the retirement interpretation that many followers attached to the phrase.

What Chahal's post showed

Chahal's absence from international cricket adds weight to the speculation for some observers. His last ODI for India was on January 24, 2023, against New Zealand, and his last T20I appearance came on August 13, 2023, against West Indies. Across his international career he represented India in 72 ODIs and 80 T20Is.

The leg-spinner was part of India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 but did not feature in a single match during the tournament. As of February 2026, he had not been recalled to the Indian side. In a February 2026 interview on Sports Tak's Salaam Cricket, Chahal addressed his situation and said online trolling "doesn't affect me much", while also expressing optimism about his future.

However, it should be noted that Chahal's post could also be linked to his last match for Northamptonshire in the County Championship's ongoing 2026 season.

Chahal's international and franchise cricket background

Away from international cricket, Chahal has remained active in franchise and county cricket. Northampton re-signed him as an overseas player for their 2026 stint alongside Australia seamer Harry Conway. His IPL journey has taken him from Mumbai Indians (2011-2013) to Royal Challengers Bangalore (2014-2021), Rajasthan Royals (2022-2024) and Punjab Kings from 2025 onwards. He also had county stints with Kent in 2023 and Northamptonshire from 2024.

One of Chahal's notable career milestones came during the 2023 IPL, when he became the first Indian to take 300 wickets in T20 cricket, achieving the landmark in Rajasthan Royals' opening match of that season against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
