Defending champions Gujarat Titans kicked off their IPL 2023 campaign in style as they clinched a comfortable victory over four-time champions Chennai Super Kings. But they were also handed a major setback in their campaign opener as senior batter Kane Williamson sustained an injury to his right knee and was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
While fielding on the boundary, Williamson tried to stop the ball from crossing the fence and jumped high. Though he was successful in getting the ball back into the field, it eventually touched the ropes and CSK gained four runs. Williamson hurt his knee while landing back on the ground after the jump, and looked in deep pain as he was unable to get back on his foot.
The team physio and benched players then carried him back to the dressing room, and the Titans made the official announcement of Williamson’s exit in a couple of days. Recently, on April 3, the franchise shared a video of Williamson leaving India to go back to his home country, as he also said that he will miss playing the tournament.
“Sad to be leaving so soon. I will miss the camp for sure. See you soon,” Williamson said in the video.
