The young Indian batter had struggled to make a mark, facing criticism for his lack of substantial contributions. However, as the series progressed, Gill's bat did all the talking, as he finally delivered.
In the initial fixtures of the series, Gill's scores failed to mirror his potential as a batter. With scores of 23 and 0 in Hyderabad, followed by 34 and 104 in Visakhapatnam, and then 0 and 91 in Rajkot, his inclusion in the team was questioned. Critics raised questions about his ability to handle pressure at the highest level.

Gill yet again proved his talent true with a spectacular performance in the fourth Test in Ranchi. As India defeated England and took a 3-1 lead in the series, Gill stepped up when it mattered the most. With England setting a challenging target on a tricky fourth innings pitch, India needed a solid start in their second innings, which they got courtesy of skipper Rohit Sharma and southpaw Yashasvi Jaiswal, who added 84 for the first wicket.
The young batter anchored the innings with determination, scoring a vital half-century that steered India towards victory. His knock of 52* propelled India towards the target.
