Hosts Australia are locking horns with the West Indies in the first of the two-match Test series at the Perth Stadium. The Aussies, who elected to bat first scored 293 on the board for the loss of two wickets at the end of Day 1.

Impressive double centuries from Marnus Labuschagne (204 runs) and Steve Smith (unbeaten 200) have propelled the side to 598/4d after having lost David Warner early on in the innings. Towards the end of play on Day 1 in the 90th over, Labuschagne, who was at the crease made a hilarious comment that left the commentators in splits.

"Oh Jason, that's a delicious ball,” Labuschagne said while batting.

The incident occurred when the West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder bowled a delivery that nipped away from the deck and was close to brushing off the Aussie batter's outside edge. Labuschagne, who was left baffled, came up with the response that left everyone in splits.

Speaking about Day 1, Warner was dismissed early on after scoring five off 16 balls. However, the innings was then amped up by Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja who kept building a vital partnership. Later on, after the fall of Khawaja, Steve Smith too constructed an important partnership with Labuschagne and scored a half-century. By virtue of his ton, Labuschagne notched up his eighth Test century.

Australia and the West Indies are playing a Test series after seven years on the Australian soil and both heavyweights will be on the lookout to clinch the series. With strong performances coming from the Australian middle order, the visitors will need to make that extra push to have an edge over the hosts.

The West Indian batters have their task cut out as they set their eyes on Australia's humongous first innings total. The opening pair of skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul will have to do the heavy lifting for the team.
