The first match of the three-game ODI series was played at Johannesburg's New Wanderers Stadium, where South African captain Aiden Markram, having won the toss, opted to bat first.

Batting first, South Africa faltered, managing a mere 116 runs on the scoreboard. Arshdeep Singh emerged as the standout performer, claiming an impressive five-wicket haul. Despite an initial missed chance to dismiss Reeza Hendricks, Arshdeep swiftly turned the tide by dismissing both Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen in consecutive deliveries. Tony de Zorzi's aggressive approach proved costly, leading to his dismissal. Heinrich Klaasen later became Arshdeep's fourth victim, leaving South Africa at 52/4 in 10 overs.

Avesh Khan joined the assault, adding to South Africa's struggles and finishing with figures of four for 27. The Indian bowlers effectively exploited seam-friendly conditions, implementing straightforward plans. The hosts' situation worsened as poor shot selection contributed to their downfall. While Phehlukwayo offered some resistance, top-scoring with 33, Arshdeep completed his maiden five-wicket haul by dismissing him in his final over. Kuldeep wrapped up the innings, and South Africa were bowled out for 116, marking their lowest ODI total at home.

In pursuit of the 117-run target, India faced an early setback with the dismissal of Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, debutant stylish left-handed batter, Sai Sudharsan and seasoned campaigner Shreyas Iyer displayed their batting prowess, forging a splendid 88-run partnership. This partnership guided the team to victory by eight wickets, securing a 1-0 lead in the series. Sai remained unbeaten with a score of 55, while Shreyas contributed 52 runs to the successful chase.
