US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti meets Mithali Raj, gets batting lesson from former India captain

The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti is having a great time on his visit to the country. Garcetti is a close assistant of the US President, Joe Biden, and was officially sworn in as the US Ambassador to India in March. He is currently touring Mumbai and exploring Indian culture.

After meeting business tycoons such as Anand Mahindra, Mukesh Ambani, and actor, Shahrukh Khan, during his visit, Garcetti also got the pleasure of meeting the legendary cricketer, Mithali Raj, on Wednesday, May 17. Garcetti shared images of his meet with the former cricketer where Raj could be seen signing a bat for the US Ambassador. In the other picture, the cricket legend was seen teaching him how to take a stance.

Garcetti took to Twitter and shared a picture with Mithali calling her an inspirational advocate of gender equity in sports and wrote, "I was delighted to meet the former captain of the Indian Women’s National Cricket Team and an inspirational advocate for gender equity in sports."

Raj replied to Garcetti’s Tweet and thanked him for inviting her over and also revealed that she gave some batting lessons to him.

Replying to his Tweet Mithali wrote, “It was lovely meeting the Ambassador of the US to India, Mr Eric Garcetti today. Thank you for inviting me over. Naturally, cricket was the topic of discussion along with some batting lessons.”

Notably, Mithali Raj is one of the legends of women’s international cricket. The 40-year-old has played, 12 Tests, 232 ODIs and 89 T20Is for India scoring 699, 7805 and 2364 runs in the three formats, respectively.

The former India captain made her international debut way back in June 1999 and scored a splendid hundred (114) on her debut against Ireland. She further became the youngest player to score a double hundred in Tests at 19 years and 254 days. Raj also has the longest career in ODIs spanning over 22 years and is also the highest run scorer of the format in Women’s cricket.

The former India captain bid adieu to international cricket in 2022 and currently does commentary on the game.
