India great Sachin Tendulkar boosted players and fans with a message shared on social media ahead of the curtain raiser of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023. Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians lock horns with Beth Mooney’s Gujarat Giants at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai on March 4.
Women’s cricket takes a major step forward with the WPL and with this, legendary cricketer Tendulkar addressed that the happenings on the field would be a ‘victory for gender equality’ in a hard-hitting message. As history beckons for women's cricket to shatter stereotypes, Tendulkar further wished fans to cheer for the players in making ‘her-story’.
“As the @wplt20 begins, let's remember that every boundary will be broken & hit out of the park for a six, and every wicket is going to be a victory for gender equality in cricket. Let's cheer on the incredible women making her-story! All the best @BCCI for organizing it. #WPL2023,” shared Tendulkar on his official Twitter handle.
Captains unveil iconic WPL Trophy
Moments prior to the toss between the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants, skippers of all the five franchises took center stage to unveil the iconic trophy. Beth Mooney, Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Meg Lanning, and Alyssa Healy were seen taking the covers off to unveil the coveted cup.
The BCCI has left no stones unturned to make the event a massive success as the gala began with the opening ceremony featuring prolific stars from the entertainment industry. Notably, Kiara Advani, AP Dhillon, and Kriti Sanon set the stage on fire in the opening ceremony of the inaugural WPL.
Speaking about the match, Beth Mooney-led Gujarat Giants won the toss and put the home side to bat first. Mumbai Indians will be on the lookout to win the historic first game of the WPL as will Gujarat. Though both sides appear terrific on paper, it remains to be seen how things pan out on the field and which team dominates the other.
