India continued their winning run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Afghanistan by eight wickets on Wednesday, October 11 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. After opting to bat first, Afghanistan posted 272/8 in their allotted 50 overs with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi top-scoring with 80 (88). In reply, India comfortably chased down the target in 35 overs courtesy of a record-shattering hundred from Indian captain Rohit Sharma (131 off 84).

Following the end of the game, Indiaโ€™s fielding coach T Dilip appreciated all the fielders for their remarkable efforts in the field. He praised the likes of Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan for keeping a tight hold on the batters with their marvellous fielding. However, it was Shardul who won the medal for the best fielder of the match for his sensational catch of Rahmanullah Gurbaz on the deep square leg boundary.

Star India batter Virat Kohli looked shell shocked on Thakur getting the award and he presented it to Thakur himself being the previous winner of the award in the game against Australia.

โ€œThat catch was I think at the crucial period because Hardik took a chance by bowling the bouncer and we needed a wicket a that stage. Very happy to convert that catch,โ€ said Thakur after receiving the medal in a video uploaded by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).

Notably, the catch took place in the 13th over of the first innings as Rahmanullah Gurbaz pulled a short delivery from Hardik Pandya towards deep square leg. Thakur, who was stationed on the boundary, showed great presence of mind to catch the ball inside the boundary and quickly got rid of it as he was falling over. The all-rounder quickly back inside the fence to complete a terrific catch as India scalped their second wicket.
