Afghanistan bring Pakistan down at Chepauk

Afghanistan showcased their dominance as they secured a resounding eight-wicket victory against Pakistan in the 22nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday, October 23. Opting to bat first, Pakistan set a competitive target of 282/7 in their 50 overs, with Babar Azam leading the charge with a well-crafted 74 runs off 92 deliveries.

In response, Afghanistan commenced their chase with an impressive partnership between openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, accumulating a formidable 130 runs for the first wicket off 127 balls. However, Shaheen Afridi's breakthrough by dismissing Gurbaz for 65 off 53 balls in the 22nd over injected some hope for Pakistan.

Despite the setback, Rahmat Shah joined forces with Zadran, contributing 60 runs for the second wicket before Hasan Ali claimed Zadran's wicket in the 34th over. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, entering the field at number four, alongside Shah, remained unbeaten to steer Afghanistan to victory with an impressive 96-run partnership.

In the first innings, Pakistan's solid opening partnership between Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq laid a strong foundation, but a remarkable performance from the Afghan bowlers, particularly Noor Ahmad on his World Cup debut with figures of 3/49, limited Pakistan to 282/7. Contributions from Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed bolstered Pakistan's total, despite the setbacks.

Afghanistan's comprehensive triumph marks their third victory in the history of the ODI World Cup, solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
