In a brilliant display of batting, Dan Lawrence of Surrey thrashed England spinner Shoaib Bashir during a Vitality County Championship Division One match against Worcestershire. The extraordinary over, which saw Bashir concede 38 runs, has registered itself into the history of county cricket and left fans at New Road in awe.

The incident occurred on day two of the match, with Surrey already in a strong position at 437 for nine. Bashir, on loan to Worcestershire from Somerset, had been toiling through a long spell, having bowled 37 overs for figures of two for 137. Little did he know that his 38th over would become one of the most expensive in County Championship history.

As Bashir stepped up to bowl what he hoped would wrap up Surrey's innings, Lawrence had other ideas. The batter demonstrated several powerful shots that left the young off-spinner in shock. Lawrence began his onslaught with two magnificent sixes straight down the ground, followed by a third that just carried over the boundary rope.

The right-hand batter continued his brutal hitting, dispatching two more of Bashir's deliveries over the ropes. At this point, everyone anticipated the possibility of six sixes in an over. However, Bashir's sixth delivery strayed down the leg side for five wides, denying Lawrence the chance to join an elite group of batters.

The over's tally of 38 runs equalled the record for the most expensive over in County Championship history, matching the feat of Alex Tudor, who conceded the same number against Lancashire in 1998 when Andrew Flintoff hit 34 runs.

Lawrence's explosive innings continued until he was finally dismissed for a magnificent 175, caught by Jake Libby off Ben Allison's bowling. His knock played a crucial role in propelling Surrey to a formidable total of 490.A
