Watch: Shan Masood gets into ugly fight with umpire following controversial dismissal versus Shoriful Islam

Shan Masood engaged in an ugly fight with umpires Adrian Holdstock and Richard Kettleborough after being given out under controversial circumstances during the second session on Day 1 of the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The first of the two-match Test series between Pakistan and Bangladesh got underway on Wednesday, August 21. After no play was possible in the first session due to a wet outfield, Bangladesh struck early in the fourth over, when Hasan Mahmud dismissed Abdullah Shafique. Pakistan captain Shan Masood walked out to the middle but he could not last long as Shoriful Islam got the better of him in the seventh over of the day.

The left-arm seamer bowled a short-of-length delivery and Masood tried to counter it with a forward defence. However, the ball nipped back from outside off-stump and went through the batter's defence before settling into wicketkeeper Litton Das' mitts. The bowler and the wicketkeeper appealed immediately but didn't get the nod of approval from Holdstock. Najmul Hossain Shanto reviewed the decision and third umpire Michael Gough was called into action.

The UltraEdge showed a spike only after the ball had passed the bat. Gough also mentioned it on air but eventually ruled it in favour of the bowling team. Masood stood his ground in disbelief before exchanging a few words with the on-field umpires. He eventually had to take the long walk back to the pavilion for a score of six runs off 11 balls.

After Shafique and Masood departed early, the onus was on Babar Azam to bat long and bail Pakistan out of trouble. However, the talismanic batter perished for a two-ball duck as the Shoriful-Litton combination did the trick once again.

Pakistan slumped to 16/3 in the ninth over as vice-captain Saud Shakeel joined Saim Ayub at the crease. The two left-handed batters played with a counter-attacking approach and stiched an unbeaten partnership of 65 off 77 balls to take the hosts to 81/3 at the Tea break. Bangladesh will want to regroup ahead of the final session and come up with better plans to break the ominous partnership.
