WPL 2023: Captains of all five teams unveil trophy ahead of curtain raiser

The Women’s Premier League kick-started on March 4 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, as Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Giants squared off. Ahead of the mega-event, the WPL opening ceremony witnessed Bollywood Stars Kiara Advani, Kriti Sanon and Musician AP Dhillon put up exhilarating performances. 

Just after the ceremony, before the coin toss of the curtain raiser, the five captains got together and unveiled the prestigious trophy of the first-ever Women’s Premier League. Five teams namely Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Giants, UP Warriorz, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore will be fighting hard to get their hands on the coveted cup and clinch the title.

While the T20 men’s franchise league, the Indian Premier League, has been going on for 15 years and will successfully enter the 16^th year in 2023, the female cricketers, especially the Indian players, have finally got their due in the form of the much-needed and much-awaited WPL 2023. 

Speaking of the tournament, Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians will be up against Beth Mooney-led Gujarat Giants in the curtain raiser. The hype for the tournament has been high, and the first game too will be expected to be a thriller. Mooney has been in great touch of late, and recently helped her side Australia clinch the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa.

Harmanpreet Kaur too showed great determination in India’s last encounter of the global event. She has led the Supernovas to three title victories in four editions of the Women’s T20 Challenge, and will be expected to repeat similar success while leading Mumbai Indians. She has got a great squad, which included some power hitters in the form of Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver.

The Giants, on the other hand, managed to assemble a star-studded overseas lineup. Alongside Mooney, the team will see Sophia Dunkley, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham, and Kim Garth among other big names. The WPL 2023 will go on till March 26, as that’s when the summit clash will be played.
