WTC Final 2023: Shubman Gill expresses disappointment on social media following his controversial dismissal

Young India batter Shubman Gill wasn’t shy to call out the umpires after a controversial decision that sent him back to the pavilion. Notably, on the penultimate day of the World Test Championship final, Cameron Green took Gill’s catch at the gully but the ball seemed to have touched the ground. Unsure on-field umpires then referred it to the third umpire who gave him out and Gill seemed to be very surprised by the decision. After the match, he immediately took to Twitter to share his reaction.

Gill captioned it with two magnifying glasses and one facepalm emoji to express his disappointment. He also took to his IG handle while clapping the decision made by umpires. Notably, umpire Richard Kettleborough used multiple angles and zoomed-in images to understand the situation but in the end, gave Gill out which surprised both the cricketer and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Meanwhile, the Punjab-born cricketer got a good start and scored 18 runs in the middle but courtesy of this controversial decision, he had to walk back to the pavilion.

It is a World Test Championship final and not just a normal match: Shami

After the completion of the match, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami voiced his opinion as the cricketer stated that the umpires should have taken more time to verify the situation. However, he later went on to add that things like these happen and it’s part of the game.

“Yes, definitely, more time could have been taken (to verify if it was a clean catch) because it is a World Test Championship final and not just a normal match. You could have checked more and zoomed in more. But it's okay, it's part of the game,” Shami was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Meanwhile, Cameron Green, who picked up the catch and Alex Carey, Australia’s stumper-batter believes that the umpire was correct in his decision-making. Green explained his emotion and what went in his head after the catch.

“At the time I definitely thought I caught it. I think in the heat of the moment I thought it was clean. It was left up to the third umpire and he agreed,” Green said. “It looked good from where I was. I thought he caught it fair and square. He was pretty happy with it, so yeah, the right decision was made,” Carey later told BBC's Test Match Special.
