The World Test Championship final 2023 continued its action-packed cricket on Day 5 as India came into the day needing 280 runs to win having seven wickets in hand with Virat Kohli (44) and Ajinkya Rahane (20) at the crease. Everything depended on the first session as India had to get through the spells of Scott Boland and Pat Cummins.

However, after a steady start for the first half an hour, India got a big blow as Scott Boland removed Virat Kohli, getting him out caught at second slip. To make matters worse, he further dismissed Ravindra Jadeja in the same over, leaving India reeling at 179/5.

Ajinkya Rahane once again tried his best to keep India in the game with his gritty knock of 46. However, he also got out chasing a wide delivery by Mitchell Starc and edged it straight to Alex Carey. Following Rahane’s dismissal, no batter could stay for long in the middle as India got all out for 234, handing a massive victory by 209 runs to Australia. Nathan Lyon was the pick of the bowlers for Australia as he picked 4/41 in 15.3 overs but Boland was the chief destroyer with his spell of 3/46 in 16 overs.

Boland picked the prized scalps of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja to break the back of Indian batting. He earlier picked 2/59 in 20 overs in the first innings.

India lose their second consecutive WTC final 2023

Travis Head was awarded Player of the Match for his sensational 163 (174) in the first innings that helped Australia get into the driver’s seat in the first innings. Head added 285 runs for the fourth wicket with Steve Smith (121) which helped Australia post a monumental score of 469 in the first innings. Meanwhile, it’s India’s second consecutive loss in the WTC Final after they lost to New Zealand by 8 wickets in the final of the inaugural edition in 2021.
