Somerset ends ties with Cameron Bancroft as the overseas player for the season

In the aftermath of the ugly incident that centered around a player who is just eight Test match old, Cameron Bancroft has attained all the unwanted limelight courtesy the Ball-tampering incident. Bancroft, who was banned by the Cricket Australia for nine months, will now not represent Somerset in the upcoming county season as the team has decided to end his contract as the overseas player for 2018.

In one of his latest public appearances, the 25-year-old says that he will regret the decision to use a sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball during the 3rd day of the Cape Town Test for the rest of his life. Earlier, Bancroft confessed his guilt of a pre-meditated attempt to tamper the ball. He even mentioned that he lied when he referred to the sandpaper as adhesive tape.

Won’t be the club member for the next season anymore

The director of Somerset Cricket Club, Andy Hurry confirmed that Cameron will not be persisted with as the overseas player for the club anymore after he was caught on screen, tampering the ball. “We are currently undertaking the process to recruit a replacement overseas player that best fits our needs and will share an update in due course,” he said.

Hurry said he had spoken a number of times with Bancroft since the incident and Bancroft was gutted on his actions and deeply apologized to everyone in the club. This act, as Bancroft mentioned, will haunt him time and again. “It’s important we remember there is a young man at the center of all this, he made a poor choice as I’m sure many of us have done during our lives,” Hurry informed Sport24.

“What’s important now is Cameron is given the appropriate support. There is no doubt in my mind he will learn from this and he will return stronger,” he concluded.
