Bangladesh just looked clueless as to how to break the opening stand between Aaron Finch and David Warner during their World Cup clash against Australia. The in-form openers were looking rock solid and had already added 117 runs in the first 20 overs. With no frontline bowler proving effective, skipper Mashrafe Mortaza handed the ball to his part-timer Soumya Sarkar.

Four balls later, the move paid off. Sarkar turned out to be the man with the golden arm as he broke the first wicket stand to give Bangladesh the much-needed breakthrough. Finch tried to glide the ball past the fielder at short third man but ended up hitting it straight into his hands. And as soon as Rubel Hossain pouched the ball, Sarkar came up with an interesting celebration. The Bangladesh opener channelled his inner Cristiano Ronaldo to celebrate the dismissal.

The iconic celebration of the football star soon became the talk of the tow and even the ICC could not help but get involved in it. The ICC World Cup Twitter handle was quick to draw a comparison between Sarkar and Ronaldo’s trademark celebration. Posting a collage of Sarkar and Ronaldo’s celebration, the ICC tweeted:

Sarkar went on to make further impact with the ball as he dismissed David Warner and Usman Khawaja too to finish with career-best figures of 3 for 58.  Sarkar, meanwhile, is not the first cricketer to imitate Ronaldo on the cricket field. Previously West Indies star Chris Gayle and Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim also celebrated their achievements on the cricket field in the same manner.

Australia beat Bangladesh:

The day, however, ended on a forgettable note for Soumya Sarkar as Australia beat Bangladesh by 48 runs in a run-fest at Trent Bridge. Chasing a mammoth 382, Bangladesh ended their innings on a commendable 333 for 8 – their highest-ever ODI total. Sarkar was run out for just 10 before the likes of Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal steadied the ship. Rahim scored an unbeaten ton while Tamim and Mahmudullah scored fifties. Bangladesh are now fifth in the points table with 2 wins from 6 games.

Fans didn’t quite like this celebration and came hard at Sarkar, they trolled his celebration and some suggested Ronaldo is wanting to announce retirement after watching that.
