After the entire nation waited an entire day for the much-awaited announcement for new Head Coach of Indian Cricket Team, Sourav Ganguly decided to postpone the much-hyped announcement. Ganguly, who is one-third of CAC (Cricket Advisory Committee) stated that there is no rush to make the announcement as he would want to consult with the captain of the Indian Cricket Team before appointing someone as the coach.

Ganguly, who was present at the press conference along with VVS Laxman and Amitabh Choudhary, felt that there still is time for the Sri Lankan Tour and the gap in between the series can be utilised to make a decision. The post of the Indian Cricket Team has remained vacant since Anil Kumble resigned from the coveted position post-India’s loss in the finals of ICC Champions Trophy.

The leading contenders

The personnel in race for Head Coach position of Indian Cricket Team are Venkatesh Prasad, Lalchand Rajput, Ravi Shastri, Dodda Ganesh, Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Phil Simmons, and Richard Pybus. Ravi Shastri is the name which is miles ahead of the others when it comes to experience with the present Indian Cricket team. Virat Kohli has been vocal about Shastri being retained in the team. Shastri was appointed as the Team Director before Anil Kumble was named as Coach. Shastri enjoyed a good rapport with the players in his previous stint.

“There is no hurry to appoint the coach, as it is a long-term prospect, at least till the end of the 2019 World Cup, Once he (Kohli), the members of the team are on the same page,” said Sourav Ganguly in the press conference. Much has been talked about the strenuous relationship between the captain of Indian Cricket team and coach Anil Kumble. Apparently, the hard taskmaster attitude of Anil Kumble did not go down well with the Indian players. As a result, Kohli had reservation about Kumble as a member of the team in the long-term plans. Kumble in his resignation letter explained his relationship with the players as untenable.
