The Indian team is on the top of its game in the longest format and is at the helm leading the rankings for some time now. Under Virat Kohli, they began their journey as an inexperienced unit that was struggling to get their act together and was placed at No.7 among the top team in the last part of 2015. Less than two years later they have a winning combination and one that can do well for a long time in the future.

Ravi Shastri the head coach of the team is proud of what the team has achieved and went on to terming them the best from the country in last two decades. The statement didn’t really go down well with a lot of former cricketers. A captain that initiated the golden phase in Indian cricket Sourav Ganguly didn’t directly affirm or reject Shastri’s comments but rather took the opportunity to wish the team best.

You’re forgetting the win in Pakistan and England

“To be honest, I don’t have much to say on this. Wish him all the best. Given him a job to do till the World Cup in 2019 and hopefully, he will get the Cup and does the job,” Ganguly told India Today.

Shastri referred to this Indian team’s Test series win in Sri Lanka (2015) which was their first in over 20 years. To give the head coach a grip of things Ganguly mentioned that his team had achieved a similar feat when they beat Pakistan on their own land which was the first in 15 years and they had also won in England in 2007.

“You’re forgetting the win in Pakistan for the first time in Pakistan in 15 years. Also the win in England in 2007. Won’t go into comparisons. Wish him all the best. Want the team to do well and hopefully he will do well in the years to come,” Dada almost taking on the offensive added.

Shastri’s statement

Earlier while interacting with the media leading into the second Test at Colombo Shastri had said, “This team has been there with each other for two years and they are much more experienced now.”

“They have already done things a lot of Indian teams and a lot of big names could not do in their careers. Like for example, win a series here (in Sri Lanka) for the first time in over 20 years. There have been a lot of big names who have played for 20 years, they have come to Sri Lanka many times and never won a series. This team is used to doing things a lot of other teams have not done,” he had said.
