Sourav Ganguly’s shirt waving celebration is one of the iconic moments in the history of Indian cricket. It was a symbol of the fact, that Indians were no longer shy to answer the opposition. Andrew Flintoff had celebrated by pulling up his shirt at Wankhede when he took last to level the one-day series in India. So when Indian team made a memorable comeback at Lord’s in the NatWest series final, Ganguly also decided to take his shirt off to celebrate the victory

Banter in the commentary box

There is no shortage of banter when former cricketers come together in the commentary. It was same today when former England skipper, Michael Atherton spotted Flintoff on the ground during their commentary stint in the India vs Sri Lanka game in the Champions Trophy.

On spotting the former all-rounder, Atherton told Ganguly “Flintoff in the ground. Don’t take off your shirt and start waving it around, Sourav. He took off his shirt once and forced you to do do it at Lord’s. One of the worst sights at the home of cricket.”

Ganguly replied: “You think so?”

As mentioned above Ganguly’s celebration was a revenge for Flintoff’s celebration against India at Wankhede Stadium in 2002. Freddie received a look of flak from the cricketing fraternity for his behaviour.

The allrounder later apologised for his behaviour when he came to India for the Champions Trophy in 2006. “It was embarrassing, to be honest. It was 10 seconds of madness. I think the series was hinged on final over. It’s not something I’m going to do it again, I got a bit of stick for it in the dressing room. Sorry,” he said during the Champions Trophy 2006.

This kind of friendly banter in the commentary box makes cricket more exciting for the viewers. It’s always nice to see players taking banter on them in a sporting way like former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly did.
