South Africa fined for slow over rate in the 1st ODI: Man of the match AB de Villiers has been fined 40% of his match fee for maintaining a slow over rate during the 1st ODI against India at Kanpur, while his team-mates were slapped with 20% of their match fees. On-field umpires Aleem Dar and Vineet Kulkarni, the TV umpire Chettithody Shamshuddin, and the reserve umpire Anil Dandekar reported the development.
The fine was obtruded by the match referee Chris Broad, who reported that South Africa were 2 overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration. De Villiers pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.
AB de Villiers subsequently served a one-match suspension during the first ODI against Bangladesh in July. He was warned on minor over rate issues on couple of occasions recently.
South Africa won the 1st ODI against India by five runs, as it turned out to be a nail biting finish. Since the game was hanging in balance for most part of the second innings the fielding captain took his time to set-up the strategy as well as his field to get it right and that is what accounted for the time consumed over the permitted limit. With the T20I trophy already in the kitty, Proteas will look to repeat the heroics going into the second ODI against India.
India will face South Africa in the 2nd ODI at Indore on 14th October.
