New Zealand made a comeback with the ball after conceding a huge first innings lead. The visitors were bowled out for just 214 in reply to South Africa’s 481/8 dec. Hosts decided to bat again and were reduced to 104/6 by end of the day’s play. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during 3rd day’s play.

1 – Quinton de Kock became the first South African wicket-keeper to score fifty plus scores in both the innings of a Test as an opener.

1 – Number of times before this game South Africa has batted again instead of enforcing follow-on after taking a lead over 267 runs in the first innings of a Test.

2 – Only the 2nd time since 2012 South Africa lost their first 6 wickets in an innings inside 100 runs. The other instance was against England earlier in January this year at Johannesburg.

4 – Quinton de Kock’s twin fifties in this game was the 4th instance of a South African wicket-keeper scoring fifty plus scores in both the innings of a Test. First since D Lindsay vs Australia in 1966.

5 – Kane Williamson now has 5 fifty plus scores in his last 6 Test innings. He didn’t score a fifty in his last innings in the previous Test where he was unbeaten on 2.

16 – Runs scored by Quinton de Kock in the first 4 balls he faced. These are the most runs scored by a South African in the first 4 balls of his innings in Tests.

40.42 – Percentage of JP Duminy’s dismissals in the form of LBW in Tests. Most for any player who has been dismissed more than 40 times.

42 – Balls taken by Quinton de Kock for his fifty in the 2nd innings of this Test. This is the 2nd fastest fifty in Tests by a South African opener. Graeme Smith scored a fifty in 41 balls against England in 2008.

45 – Runs scored by Kane Williamson in his previous 5 Test innings in South Africa. He scored 77 runs in the first innings of this Test.

2007 – Last time a wicket keeper before de Kock scored fifty-plus scores in both the innings of a Test while opening was Kamran Akmal vs South Africa in 2007.

2013 – Last time before this Test, 5 out of New Zealand’s Top 7 got out for single digits in same innings in Tests was in 2013 also vs South Africa at Cape Town.
