Stuart Broad’s bizarre dismissal on day one of the ongoing second Test between South Africa and England summed up the visitors’ performance and luck on the tour so far. Not much has gone England’s way in South Africa so far as they trail in the series after losing the first Test. Even before the start of the series, a number of England players were struck by illness.
Chris Woakes, Jack Leach and Ollie Pope were all ruled out of contention for the series opener due to illness. During the first Test, captain Joe Root and Jos Buttler also fell ill during the match but managed to bat. And just a day before the second Test, in-form opener Rory Burns suffered an injury on his ankle while playing football during a warm-up session.
Burns failed to recover in time for the match and England had to include Zak Crawley in the playing eleven. Coming to Stuart Broad, the England star was out in a bizarre manner. He was the last England wicket to fall on day one of the Test and the visitors must have been ruing the dismissal.
The veteran pacer was expecting a short delivery from South Africa pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada. In fact, Broad also jumped a little bit perhaps to deal with the bounce. However, Rabada left him red-faced by bowling a perfect yorker as Broad was completely bamboozled by the delivery. The ball went on to crash into his stumps. Broad could only score 1 run.

South Africa on top in the Test
England, meanwhile, ended day one on 262 for 2 with Ollie Pope’s impressive fifty keeping them in the hunt for a competitive total as the visitors came up with yet another dismal batting display on the tour. The top order failed to build on decent starts on a good pitch. England recovered for a while to reach 184 for 4 but undid all the good work by losing their next five wickets for 49 runs. Ollie Pope made a defiant unbeaten 56 to make sure England remain on course for a challenging total.
