Temba Bavuma and Rassie Van der Dussen slammed hundreds, sharing a mammoth 204-run stand for the fourth wicket in the first ODI in Paarl. Skipper Bavuma, who recorded his first ODI ton since the year 2016, along with Van der Dussen took his team to a competitive total of 296 runs for the loss of just fours wickets in their allotted 50 overs. India subsequently suffered a 31-run defeat.

KL Rahul, who captained the team for the first time in the ODI format, won the toss and elected to field first. Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram both fell for single-digit scores as Quinton de Kock scored 27 before the Bavuma-Van der Dussen show. Coming to bat at number four, captain Bavuma along with Van der Dussen dominated the Indian bowling as they shared 204 runs for the fourth wicket as the latter recorded his highest score in the ODIs. For the visitors, Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets as other bowlers had an off day.

In reply, ODI regular Shikhar Dhawan scored 79 runs and former skipper Virat Kohli chalked up 51 runs but their fifties went in vain. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer all scored below 20 while debutant Ventakesh Iyer could obly manage two runs. Shardul Thakur scored a fifty lower down the order with victory seemed a formality for the hosts.

Except for Marco Jansen, all the Proteas bowlers were amongst the wickets. Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi and Andile Phehlukwayo snared two wickets each. Van der Dussen, for scoring his second ton and an unbeaten 129-run knock, was adjudged as the Player of the Match.
