Captain Dean Elgar stood tall for South Africa as he remained unbeaten on 96 to guide his team to a famous victory over the Asian giants on the fourth day of the second Test, which started late due to rain in Johannesburg. The hosts tasted success for the first time in six matches against India at the Wanderers stadium.

Resuming at his overnight score of 46, skipper Elgar brought up his half-century and was equally supported by Rassie van der Dussen who had suffered three low scores in the previous three innings. Mohammed Shami finally provided the breakthrough for India when he got van der dussen out for 40 with South Africa’s score reaching 175. In-form batter Temba Bavuma then joined hands with the skipper to seal the deal for the hosts.

For India, Shardul Thakur’s seven-wicket haul in the first innings and the under-performing duo of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane scoring fifties in the second innings were the positives from the match.

For the Proteas, runs from Temba Bavuma, Keegan Petersen, and from the captain himself along with the performances of the pacers were the highlights. For his brilliant captain’s knock of 96*, Dean Elgar was adjudged the Player of the Match as the series is now all square at 1-1. The third and decisive match takes place at Newlands, Cape Town starting January 11, 2022.
