Having started the series 0-1 down, the hosts South Africa now lead the 5-match ODI series against Pakistan 2-1 as they won the 3rd ODI by 13 runs via DLS method. The visiting team put on 317/6 in their 50 overs as Imam-ul-Haq scored 101 while Babar Azam (69) and Mohammad Hafeez (52) contributed with fifties.

South Africa lost the openers after a good start and were behind on the DLS score par during the first intervention. Reeza Hendricks’ 90-ball 83 and skipper Faf du Plessis’ 42-ball 40 then put the Saffers well ahead of the par score at 187/2 after 33 overs. The rain made its appearance once again and ensured that play never resumed.

All the major stats and numbers recorded during the rain-affected game in Centurion:

A rare defeat after a big total for Pakistan:

2 – This is only the 2nd time outside Asia and 6th overall instance when Pakistan post a 300+ total while batting first in an ODI and ended up on the losing side. The other such instance was during the 2017 Providence ODI against the Windies where they made 308/5.

317/6 – Pakistan’s total of 317/6 is their 2nd highest ODI total while batting first in a losing cause. Their highest 1st innings total in losing cause in an ODI was 329/6 against India during the 2012 Asia Cup game in Dhaka.

A rare win for South Africa as well:

1 – For the first time in their history, South Africa won an ODI against an Asian team after conceding 300+ while bowling first. The previous highest first innings total by an Asian team to lose an ODI to South Africa was 296 by India during the 2011 CWC game in Nagpur.

India lost their last nine wickets for 29 runs in that World Cup game as they collapsed from 267/1 in the 39th over to 296/10 in 49th over.

Records galore for Imam:

19 – Imam-ul-Haq became the joint 2nd fastest to complete 1000 runs in ODI cricket. He took just 19 innings for the milestone, one less than his opening partner Fakhar Zaman (18). Pakistan’s No.3 batsman Babar Azam completed this milestone in 21 innings and shares the 3rd spot in the all-time list with four other players.

19 – Number of innings Imam needed to score his 5th century in ODI cricket; the joint fewest for any player. Quinton de Kock also scored his 5th ODI century in his 19th innings.

2015 – The last instance when a Pakistan opener’s ODI century went in vain was in April 2015. The batsman was Azhar Ali when he scored 101 against Bangladesh in the Dhaka ODI. Since then, ten consecutive ODI tons by Pakistan openers resulted in wins before this game.

In fact, this is also the first of the 13 ODI centuries by Pakistan players to result in a defeat. The last ODI ton by a Men in Green player in a losing cause was 100 by Babar Azam during the 2017 Adelaide ODI.

A high-scoring venue:

5 – South Africa have conceded 300+ totals in the ODI format on five occasions at the Supersport Park. This is only the 2nd venue where they conceded five 300+ ODI totals after the Wanderers in Johannesburg (5).

12 – Number of 300+ ODI totals at the Centurion since the start of 2009. In these ten years, only RPS, Colombo (14) and Bulawayo (13) have witnessed more 300+ totals than Centurion. The Sydney Cricket Ground and the Mirpur Stadium in Dhaka are also venues with as many as 12 300+ ODI totals.

A good day for the top-order:

1 – Five of Pakistan’s top six scored 30 and more during this inning. This is the first such instance in ODI cricket for Pakistan against the Proteas and also the first in South Africa.

3 – For the 3rd consecutive ODI this series, South Africa’s No.3 batsman scored a fifty.
