South Africa completed a whitewash in the 5-match ODI series against Sri Lanka with yet another comfortable victory at the Newlands in Cape Town. The South African bowlers kept striking to restrict the Lankan team to 225/10 which wouldn’t have been possible without a crucial 56 from Kusal Mendis.

The hosts lost the in-form Quinton de Kock (6) and Faf du Plessis (24) earlier on but Aiden Markram (67*) and Rassie van der Dussen (28*) put the Proteas on the top. Floodlight failure intervened after South Africa made 135/2 from 25 overs. The game never resumed as the hosts won the game by 41 runs (DLS Method).

Here are all the major stats and numbers that were recorded during the final game of the 5-match ODI series:

Yet another whitewash for the Lankans:

6 – This is the 6th time South Africa won a 5-match ODI series by 5-0 margin. Pakistan (7) and India (6) are the other teams with six ODI series wins with a 5-0 margin. Sri Lanka has been whitewashed on five occasions in the 5-match ODI series.

Only Zimbabwe (9) and New Zealand (5) have been on the receiving end more often than the Lankans. All the five such series defeats of Sri Lanka have been recorded in the last five years including four of them since the start of 2017.

10 – South Africa won each of their last ten ODI series at home against Sri Lanka. They whitewashed the visiting Lankan team during a 5-match ODI series at the start of 2017. This defeat also extended Sri Lanka’s losing streak in ODIs to eight matches.

De Kock falls short:

0 – Quinton de Kock missed a chance of becoming the first South African to score fifty-plus in six consecutive ODI innings. He ended the ODI series against Pakistan with a fifty and had four scores over 50 in this series against South Africa.

De Kock also missed a chance of becoming the first player from South Africa with fifty-plus scores in eight consecutive international matches. Faf du Plessis earlier this year and Aubrey Faulkner between 1910 and 1912 had at least one fifty-plus score across seven consecutive international games.

353 – De Kock’s 353 runs in this series are the 2nd most by a South African wicketkeeper in an ODI series/tournament. AB de Villiers aggregated 367 runs as a keeper during the 2013 home ODI series against South Africa.

353 – The 353 runs by Quinton are the 3rd most by any player in a SA-SL ODI series. Faf du Plessis scored 410 runs during the 2017 home ODI series while Kumar Sangakkara aggregated 372 runs during the home ODI series in 2013.

Milestones for Du Plessis:

2,008 – Faf du Plessis became only the 12th player to aggregate 2,000 ODI runs in South Africa. He scored 2008 ODI runs at home across 50 innings at an average of 46.69 with five centuries and 11 fifties.

10,008 – Du Plessis became the 8th player to aggregate 10000 runs in international cricket for South Africa. Faf has 10,070 runs in his international career including 62 runs for the World XI which he scored during the Independence Cup in Pakistan in 2017.
