Dean Elgar has recently been in prime form for South Africa, especially in Test cricket. The left-hander has shown nerves of steel, opening the batting for the Proteas and has emerged as one of their most reliable batsmen owing to his abilities to grind down the opposition bowling. Elgar has recently been roped in by Surrey for the County Championship.

The Proteas batsman has already played three games for the county in 2015. As per reports in Cricket 365, he will be available to the squad prior to their opening game against Hampshire on April 20. Apart from Surrey, the left-handed batsman has previously played for Somerset in 2013 and 2017 respectively. The cricketer recently spoke to the media and thanked the county for the upcoming stint.

“A real bonus” for Surrey

“I am really grateful for the opportunity to be back at Surrey for the start of the summer. I hope to contribute for the period I am at the club, on and off the field, and I’m looking forward to seeing all involved at the great club again.” Elgar mentioned to the media.

Mitchell Marsh was earlier roped in by the team for the upcoming season. However, he has been ruled out of the tournament as he would be undergoing ankle surgery. Alec Stewart, the Director of Surrey Cricket, recently mentioned the signing as a lucky break for the team and hailed Elgar’s prowess as a cricketer.

“Given the news that Mitch Marsh will need ankle surgery, to be able to bring someone of Dean’s calibre to the club, at such short notice, for the first period of the season is a real bonus. We know Dean well after his time with us in 2015 and his international quality and experience will be a real asset. We look forward to welcoming him to the Kia Oval,” Stuart mentioned.
