Former South African all-rounder Trevor Goddard passed away during the 3rd day’s play of the final Test between Australia and South Africa and Australia. Goddard, a former South African captain played 41 Tests for the nation with an impressive record in both the batting and bowling department.

When the Proteas took the field on Sunday they were duly wearing the black armbands but CSA Communications head Atlaaf Kazi stated that the armbands were worn by the South African team on the request of Cricket Australia to mark the 2nd death anniversary of Phil Hughes, who was struck on the head by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match and died in hospital three days prior to his 26th birthday. Kazi was not sure whether the Proteas were also paying their respect to Goddard.

Former Test batsman Daryl Cullinan expressed his grief on social media on Saturday and said Goddard who captained South Africa in 13 Tests was “a well-loved and respected cricketer”.

“I hope he will be acknowledged with black armbands in Adelaide tomorrow.” Cullinan wrote.

Former South African legend Barry Richards asked on the social media, “Glad (they’re) remembering Phil Hughes. Trevor Goddard as well I hope?”

Kazi also stated that the policy was to wear the black armbands was only when a family member or someone close to the team died.

Australia finally managed to salvage some pride after winning the 3rd and the final Test against the visitors after already surrendering the series in Hobart.

It was Usman Khwaja’s brilliant century in the 1st innings that took the hosts to a position of strength and from there on Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon took charge in the 2nd innings to bowl out the Proteas cheaply in the 2nd innings. Debutant Matt Renshaw played a patient knock and was there until the end to ensure Australia won the match by 7 wickets. The Proteas won the series 2-1.
